A baitcasting reel is a low profile reel with a spool centred between two side plates,
and a built-in star drag system. They feature a thumb button to activate
the free spool mechanism prior to a cast. The free rotating spool provides
less friction than fixed spool reels thereby offering greater casting distance
and accuracy. Control of the cast is also an advantage of this reel since the spool
first can be slowed and then stopped when the bait hits the water.
Shimano’s very successful Antares model has now been modified
to suit the demands for baitcasting in brackish and even saltwater.
The Shimano Antares Version 2 features the same details as the Antares,
but has an increased gear ratio (6,2:1) to offer high speed retrieval,
along with a larger diameter aluminum spool
capable of holding up to 115 meters of 20Lb line.
